On this non-class day, my main task was grading the section three submissions of the transition playbook for the 370 class. This section happened to be one of the longest parts of the project, which is why it was assigned separately for submission. As I began grading these assignments, I adopted a slightly tougher grading approach than usual. This decision was motivated by the fact that we had covered this section extensively in class and had offered multiple opportunities for students to seek assistance. However, only a few students had taken advantage of this support, and their lack of engagement was evident in their work. I am also feeling more comfortable grading assignments than I did before.
While I understand that the concept of giving their full effort varies from student to student, it became apparent that some students needed to invest more effort into their submissions. It was disappointing to see that a consistent group of students either submitted their work late or neglected to follow all the given instructions. There seemed to be a misconception among some students that because it was not Dr. Tiell grading their assignments, they would receive easy A grades. However, I wanted to ensure that these students were still learning and growing, even with me serving as the TA this semester.
It is my responsibility to uphold the same standards and expectations for all students, regardless of who is grading their work. By maintaining high standards, I aim to motivate students to put in the necessary effort, take their assignments seriously, and ultimately learn from the course material.
